Modularity

Modularity means having standard structural parts with specific functions and qualities, which can be replaced with similar or corresponding parts. A traditional light bulb is a module to the luminaire, whereas a traditional luminaire is modular.

Valopaa has modular product platforms for LED luminaires, intelligent LED luminaires and intelligent LED lighting systems.
Modularity is not self-evident in LED luminaires, most LED luminaires are, in fact, still integrated. In practise this often means that the entire luminaire must be replaced when it malfunctions. This is acceptable if we are talking about single, inexpensive luminaires. However, when there are plenty of luminaires and a long lifespan is expected, a maintainable, modular luminaire becomes a must. The faulty part, the module, can be replaced. The technology of the luminaire can also be updated with changing the module.

Benefits of modularity:
  • The product remains maintainable and serviceable, ensuring a longer lifespan for the product.
  • The reliability of product is firmer, since the same parts are also used elsewhere.
  • Modularity reduces the risk at purchase.

The Impact of LEDs into Modularity

A LED is an electrical component, which with time will stop working, as all electrical components do. A regular user of a luminaire cannot change a LED, if it breaks down or needs to be updated. A good LED luminaire needs also to be dust and moisture proof in order to last long. This also makes replacing individual LEDs difficult for the users.

LEDs as components are developing rapidly all the time. Presently we already have all kinds of versions, there are significant differences in colours, colour temperatures and energy efficiency. All of these factors must be taken into consideration when we need a certain type of lighting and energy efficiency. All of the above result in the need for modularity in LED lighting.

Modularity in Valopaa Luminaires

Modularity is a central concept in Valopaa products. All Valopaa products are based on the VPM LED modules of the company. The modules were initially designed for street lighting, but they can be deployed into a wide array of targets. Furthermore, this results in having reliable structural parts and that the luminaires with these modules remain serviceable and maintainable years down the road, due to the long lifespan.

All VPM LED modules share the same structural parts: the LED card and the lenses aligning the light. Only the mechanics of the LED modules differ. The LED card contains the desired LEDs. A product sticker is attached to each LED module or luminaire, containing the following essentials:
  • Type of LED components and energy efficiency
  • Colour temperature/bin
  • Lens identifier and installation direction of lens
  • Model, version and colour of module mechanics
  • Electrical connection and version of module
Information about all luminaires delivered by Valopaa to all customers will be stored in the Valopaa database, including data of the LED modules used in each luminaire.

Valopaa can also implement the same photometric qualities with differing LEDs than presently, thus enabling a longer lifespan.
