Valopaa´s LED Modules Installed into Old Cupola Luminaires

The outdoor lighting of Orion´s pharmaceutical manufacturing site in Turku, Finland, was modernised in January 2012. The project was exceptional because the casing, the look of the luminaire, and the lighting infrastructure were fully preserved. Installing Valopaa´s LED modules inside the classic dome-shaped Cupola luminaires was the solution.
The need to renew the outdoor lighting at Orion had many reasons. Veikko Lehtimäki, supervisor of electrical systems at Orion emphasises that the company always strives for environmentally friendly action.

The Cupola luminaires at the Turku site had mercury vapour lamps. However, the manufacturing and sale of the inefficient mercury vapour lamps will seize by 2015 by EU regulations. Lehtimäki states that renovating their outdoor lighting would have been required in the near future regardless.

There are 87 outdoor luminaires altogether at the Turku site. 54 of them had 250 W mercury vapour lamps, and 33 had 125 W. The replacing LED lighting units are 75 W and 39 W. Cost calculations show that the outdoor LED luminaires bring substantial savings during their lifetime compared to the old mercury vapour lamps.
The experiences from the new LED technology inside the old Cupola luminaires have been very positive, according to Mr. Lehtimäki.
“We get the same amount of light with much smaller energy use. Also the light distribution is very successful. The installation of the LED lighting units went without any problems´, he states appreciatively.
Preparations for the renewal of the Orion site began in 2011. A pilot version of the modernised luminaire was constructed first, to showcase what the end result might look like. The pilot enabled Valopaa to improve the protection class further and ease the installation process
